3 Things To Do In Milford Sound

Milford Sound in New Zealand’s South Island is an almost untouched natural landscape, carved out by glaciers over thousands of years and left to flourish over time. When you travel here, whether by flight or on foot, you’ll make unforgettable memories and see irreplaceable sights. But, with so much to do and see, you may find yourself wondering about what to do in Milford Sound.

At Southern Alps Air, we’re more than happy to give you three quality recommendations to get your trip started!

Walk the Milford Track

The absolute first thing you should do in Milford Sound is walk the Milford Track. If you’re able, pop your hiking boots on and take off! The Track is one of the Great Walks of New Zealand, covering massive sprawls of temperate rainforest and mountains, with an impressive length of 53.5km. Importantly, it can be quite a challenging hike, but with the right company, most keen tourists can traverse the wonderful sights that Milford Track has to offer.

The best time to hike the Milford Track is during New Zealand’s Great Walks season, between the summer months of October and April, where the weather is favourable and walm.

Visit Te Anau Glowworm Caves

Milford Sound hides a mysterious underground world in the form of the 12,000-year-old Te Anau Glowworm Caves, where the stars shine all day!

Situated on the western shores of the beautiful Lake Te Anau, these caves are actually very young, and are still being shaped by the flowing river within. When visiting, you’ll have to navigate a labyrinthine amount of limestone passages filled with sculpted rock and even an underground waterfall. The grotto, accessible by boat, is where hundreds of glowworms thrive and glitter – an extraordinary display.

Unwind at Mirror Lakes

Located in the picturesque Eglington Valley, the Mirror Lakes are framed by the momentous Earl Mountains and are perfectly reflective – the water’s so clear, it’s unlike anything you will have seen before! Take the time to rest, unwind and snap some beautiful photos here. For the best light, (and the most perfect reflections of the Earl Mountains on the water!), we recommend visiting in the morning-time.

For a once-in-a-lifetime Milford Sound fly-cruise-fly from Wanaka trip, look no further than Southern Alps Air. We guide our customers through over 100 glaciers, and show them panoramic views of the finest mountains in New Zealand. Interested? Contact us for more information about booking, today.
