FAQ’s – Siberia Experience

How long is the trip?

Allow 4 hours for the Siberia Experience and 4.5 hours for the Siberia Experience Extended.

What clothing should I bring?

We recommend you to bring your normal walking gear a waterproof layer and a warm outer layer just in case.

What type of footwear should I bring?

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. There is a stream you cross at the start of the walk if you have a spare pair of sandals or shoes that you can get wet it is a good idea to bring them as well. Or you can borrow from our supply at our Makarora office when you check in. 

What gear do I need to bring?

Insect repellent, sunglasses and camera are recommended. Also anything else for your personal comfort.

Should I take food with me?

The total trip time is 4 hours. Bringing along some snacks or lunch is a good idea.

What time do I need to check in?

We ask that you arrive at our Makarora office 30 minutes before your departure time.

Where do I need to check in?

The check in location is at our Makarora Office located inside the Makarora Tourist Centre and Cafe. Address: 5944 Haast Pass-Makarora Rd.
Makarora is situated on State Highway 6 on the eastern side of the Haast Pass and adjacent to the Makarora River. Allow 1 hour to drive from Wanaka to our Makarora base.

Can I stay overnight in Siberia?

Yes. It can be arranged that the jet boat will pick you up the next day, allowing time to stay overnight in the Siberia Valley. Siberia Hut beds have to be pre-booked on-line with Department of Conservation from 01 Dec to 08 April to help eliminate overcrowding. Booking can be accessed at www.doc.govt.nz

If you have any problem booking you would be advised to email Department of Conservation, Wanaka New Zealand at wanakavc@doc.govt.nz. Note: for overnight stays – Siberia Experience provides transport into and out of the Mt Aspiring National Park by way of a scenic flight (Southern Alps Air) and jetboat (Wilkin River Jets) – you are responsible for all other aspects of your trip outside of the transportation.

How hard is the walk?

You need a moderate level of fitness. If you can walk for three hours at a steady pace which includes up and down hill sections you should be able to walk the track.
