Wanaka Region
Mt Iron Walk 1-1.5hr walk 4.5km
A great introduction to Wanaka this circuit walk over a glacially carved rocky knoll of 240 metres is a must for anyone who enjoys exercise coupled with fabulous views. This is a well formed track with seating placed at strategic viewing points along the way. Once at the summit you will enjoy impressive panoramic views including Lakes Wanaka against the backdrop of the Southern Alps, Lake Hawea, Upper Clutha and Cardrona Valleys and many other surrounding peaks and mountain ranges. The Mt Iron Walk is like a religion to many of the local Wanaka residents who take this walk on a regular, often daily basis to keep themselves fit and healthy and able to enjoy the amazing walks and outdoor pursuits and activities Wanaka offers.
Diamond Lake
Circuit Track return 45 min 2.5km
Lookout return 1hr 2 km
Lake Wanaka Lookout return 2hr 5km
Rocky Mountain Summit return 3hr 7km
From the carpark follow the 4WD track to the Diamond Lake where the circuit track is marked and begins. Another track continues up further to the lookout above Diamond Lake. Beyond there, there is a choice of tacking either the track to the Lake Wanaka Lookout or to the 775 metre summit of Rocky Mountain.
Waterfall Creek Track 1hr 1.5km
This track starts from the west end of Roys Bay (15 minute walk from Wanaka CBD) not far from here you will reach Wanaka Station Park a lovely picnic area and Edgewater Resort (who make the best scones in Wanaka). The track winds along the lake shore past Rippon Vineyard with amazning views of the lake before reaching Waterfall Creek.
Damper Bay Track 2-3hr
Across Waterfall Creek the track continues for a further 1 hour on terraces above Lake Wanaka, to a small beach perfect swimming.
Eely Point Track 15 mins each way
This short walk starts at the boat ramp in Lake Wanaka and follows the lake side to Eely point which is a popular beach for swimming, boating and picnics as it is sheltered from the prevailing winds.
Bremner Bay 5 mins each way
Five minutes further on from Eely point is Bremner Bay a popular spot for families as the the bay is shallow.
Outlet Walk 1 hr 3km
Starting from either Lake Wanaka outlet or Albertown this track follows the Clutha River, allowing amazing views of the Clutha River and access for fishing. This track is also suitable for bikes.
Hawea River Track 3-4 hrs 14km
Albert Town to Hawea Dam
This track is suitable for all ages and experience. The river side walk links Lake Hawea township with Lake Wanaka via Albert Town. Is suitable for bikes too.
Roys Peak Track 5-6hrs 11km
The views from the 1578 metre summit includes most of Lake Wanaka and the peaks of Mt Aspiring. The track is exposed and temperatures can drop very quickly even in summer so you will need to take warm, windproof clothing.
Skyline Route 10-11 hrs 19km
This challenging trek begins from the top of the Roys Peak. From the peak the track follows the ridge line over Mt Alpha and descends through snow tussock to the 4 WD track. Follow the poled route to the Cardrona Road which is 10 km from Wanaka Township. This track is prone to low cloud cover and is not recommended during winter.
Haast Pass Highway Walks
Blue Pools
Time: 30 minAn easy walk that starts at the carpark just north of Muddy Creek and leads through silver beech/tahina to a swingbridge overlooking the pools at the mouth of Blue River. Large brown and rainbow trout can often be seen feeding in the pools.
Roaring Billy Falls Walk
Time: 30 min
An easy walk along a track lined with tree fern, passing miro, matai and silver beech trees. The broad gravel bed of the Haast River is in contrast to the jumble of huge boulders over which the aptly named Roaring Billy cascades.
Thunder Creek Falls Walk
Time: 5 min
A walk suitable for wheelchairs, to a view of impressive 28 metre high falls. Like all waterfalls in the Haast Valley these are at their best after rainfall.
Fantail Falls Walk
Time: 5 min
From the carpark this short bush walk leads to a beautiful fan-shaped waterfall at the foot of Fantail Creek.
